40% in Sub-Saharan Africa<\/h2>\n

Almost\u00a040<\/strong>%<\/strong>\u00a0of those without an improved source of drinking water live in\u00a0Sub<\/strong>–<\/strong>Saharan Africa<\/strong>.\u00a0(UN 2014)<\/a><\/p>\n

In East Africa, water scarcity is a burden on women and girls and a barrier toward education and economic equality<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Responsibility of Water Collection<\/h2>\n

Women and girls are responsible for water collection in\u00a08 out of 10 households<\/strong>\u00a0where water is not piped into the home. (WHO and UNICEF, 2017)<\/p>\n

3.5 Miles a Day to Collect Water<\/h2>\n

Women and girls in developing countries walk an average of\u00a03<\/strong>.<\/strong>5 miles every day<\/strong>\u00a0to fetch water. (USAID, 2013)<\/p>\n

Lack of Sanitation<\/h2>\n

Lack of sanitation facilities (with clean water) for girls reaching puberty makes them\u00a0more likely to miss school<\/strong>\u00a0than boys. (WHO and UNICEF, 2019)<\/p>\n

Water scarcity and contamination are dangerous to health and the sources of preventable disease and death<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Water Diseases<\/h2>\n

Contaminated water can transmit diseases such diarrhea, cholera, dysentery, typhoid, and polio. Contaminated drinking water is estimated to cause\u00a0485,000 diarrheal deaths<\/strong>\u00a0each year. (WHO)<\/p>\n

Child Mortality<\/h2>\n

The impact on\u00a0child mortality rates<\/strong>\u00a0is devastating with more than 297,000 children under five who die annually from diarrhoeal diseases due to poor sanitation, poor hygiene, or unsafe drinking water. (WHO, 2019)<\/p>\n

Lack of Hand Washing Facilities at Home<\/h2>\n

Water scarcity negatively impacts the availability of hand washing facilities. 1 in 3 people, or 2.3 billion, around the world\u00a0lack basic hand washing<\/strong>\u00a0facilities at home. (WHO and UNICEF, 2021)<\/p>\n

There is a failure in the water aid industry to provide reliable and lasting clean water solutions to the communities that need it<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

60% Failure Rate<\/h2>\n

60<\/strong>% <\/strong>of water projects in Africa fail<\/strong>\u00a0on average, forcing communities to return to unsafe water sources.<\/p>\n

Less than 5% of water projects are visited after they\u2019re constructed, and less than 1% are monitored long-term, (World Bank, 2011).<\/p>\n

No Training & Support<\/h2>\n

Communities where water projects fail are often not provided with the training and support required to maintain and manage their water systems.<\/p>\n
